Healthcare navigation controls cost and drives smarter benefits engagement
Challenge

How to increase benefits awareness while improving the member experience

Mary Kay has always had a generous healthcare plan consistent with their philosophy of focusing on employee wellbeing.

However, as the cost of healthcare continued to rise, the company needed to pivot. Lack of chronic condition management, inappropriate use of benefits resources and lack of awareness around more cost-effective healthcare alternatives were the top three cost drivers.

Solution

Driving engagement and cost savings through proactive healthcare navigation

Because members’ health benefits had previously been almost fully paid by the company, education was necessary to lessen frustration. Additionally, with 25% of members living with chronic conditions, targeted engagement was needed to cut costs and boost positive health outcomes.

Quantum Health identified unnecessary ER visits as a top cost driver for Mary Kay. To combat this, our Care Coordinators encouraged primary care relationships and routine care to avoid costly complications.

Results

Increased engagement improves the benefits experience and reduces healthcare costs

Navigation leads to fewer ER visits and improved chronic condition management

By adding expert healthcare navigation and care coordination to Mary Kay’s benefits experience, our Care Coordinators were able to regularly educate and engage with executives, office staff and manufacturing and warehouse employees. Mary Kay‘s number of avoidable ER visits declined by nearly half, and their primary care utilization increased to nearly 80%.

85%

“Quantum Health has partnered with us and helped our employees navigate the complicated healthcare system while treating them like the most important person in the room (like Mary Kay used to say). They‘ve also reduced our costs, so we are paying less today than we were five years ago — and that‘s with healthcare costs increasing 6%-8% each year. It‘s been a great partnership.”
