For some people, their "best day" may mean getting a new job or buying their first home. For Health Coach Sarah Blanton, it has an entirely different meaning. "Helping people is my passion," says Sarah. "When a member tells me I've helped them succeed in meeting their goals—no matter whether it's losing 10 pounds, getting off medication or quitting tobacco—that's my best day. I'm lucky because I have LOTS of best days in my role here at Quantum Health!"
Sarah knew from a young age that she was destined to make a difference in people's lives. With a degree in exercise physiology and a minor in aquatic therapy, Sarah began her career teaching deep water running classes—perfect for those in rehab with joint and muscular issues.
When she joined the Quantum team in 2015, Sarah was excited to continue her pursuit of helping others succeed. "As a Health Coach, a big part of our job is providing sanctuary for our members," says Sarah. "Before they are willing to make a change in their lives, we have to gain their trust. We give them a safe place to share their fears, their struggles and their goals. By asking open-ended questions, we're able to discover the areas in which they want to improve.
"What sets us apart as a business is that we don't have a 'one size fits all' approach to our coaching. Whether it be health, maternity or tobacco cessation coaching, every member receives a personalized plan perfectly suited to his or her situation," says Sarah.
Sarah has "regulars" who she coaches biweekly—some come from her outreaching efforts and some call in on their own looking for help. In May of 2016, Sarah outreached to our member Mary based on her biometric results and encouraged Mary to begin health coaching. She was a bit reluctant because of her recurrent foot pain and wasn't able to exercise as much as she would like. In addition, she wasn't eating well because she didn't enjoy cooking and couldn't stand for long periods of time. So, fast food became the norm. After a year of consistent health coaching with Sarah, Mary now exercises every single day—and just bought a new stationary bike! Mary also prepares healthy meals at home regularly thanks to the meal prepping techniques that Sarah shared with her. Mary even encourages her coworkers to join her in following a healthy lifestyle—a far cry from when she began her journey in 2016.
Sarah says, "Mary and I developed such a friendship that she now opens up to me about personal family issues and things going on at work. She always tells me how much she appreciates my friendship and how much she looks forward to our calls. I've kept some of her emails as a constant reminder that although I may not be able to get through to everyone, I have helped a LOT of people to succeed—and made some lifelong friendships along the way."
